LANAP Laser Periodontal Procedures
Laser Gum Treatment Middletown CT
Dr. Gelb is Publisher and Editor, along with his colleague Dr. Neal Lehrman, of The Wavelength at www.thewavelength.org , an online case reports journal. This publication will help usher in a new era of collaborative dentistry by bringing together both clinicians and patients alike into a marketplace of ideas dedicated to the discussion of and advancement of Laser Periodontal Therapy (LANAP-Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) and its related procedures.
What is LANAP?
LANAP stands for Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure. The first and only FDA cleared laser surgery to treat gum disease that is supported by both clinical and laboratory research.
This incredible surgical treatment allows for targeting removal of diseased gum tissue, while leaving your body’s own healthy tissues intact.
Another recent development in periodontal treatment is the use of laser to regenerate gum tissue. Utilizing the body’s own natural ability to “heal itself”, Dr. Gelb utilizes the PerioLase™ for the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™). Performed without a scalpel and sutures, LANAP™ creates an environment for regeneration of the tissues around your teeth (gum, bone, cementum, ligament) that are lost due to periodontal disease.
How Does LANAP Work?
The laser therapy works by targeting only diseased gum, which it discerned by the color. Diseased gums are darker than healthy gums. The laser is then used to agitate the healthy tissue, encouraging it to reattach to the bone. Because of the regrowth of this connective tissue, there is also a much lower chance of gum disease returning than with traditional surgery.
Does LANAP hurt?
Due to the ability of the laser to target and remove only diseased tissue, Dr. Gelb is able to help restore you to health with no post-operative pain and fewer side effects and risks than traditional surgery. This is in conjunction with a detailed homecare program that is described on our LANAP Post Op Instructions page.
